BYSA Policy for Intown and Crosstown players Playing Up/Down

Position Statement:

Beverly Youth Soccer Association (BYSA) strongly encourages all players to play with the grade group that aligns with their current grade level in school. The BYSA organization believes that BYSA or Town Soccer should be a time to play with Beverly peers and friends. We believe this promotes appropriate development, self confidence, fosters friendships, and is in the greater long term interest of the player and BYSA.

While BYSA’s official position advocates for players to play in their grade group, we understand that some families will have unique circumstances that will motivate them to request their child play in a higher/lower grade level in-town division. For those families wishing to have their child play up in a different grade level division, they must follow these procedures.

  1. Prior to registration, a parent must send an email to both Grade Level coordinators affected and the BYSA President.
  2. For safety reasons, the parent must agree to coach or physically be present at all practices and games throughout the season.

-Placement on a team in a higher/lower division is not guaranteed. If the desired grade level division is full and it is deemed that the player playing up is taking a spot from another player, the request to play up will be denied.

-If at any time, the coach or BYSA board determines the player who has chosen to play up/down presents a safety risk to themselves or there are behavioral concerns, the player may be asked to move back to their current grade level division.

-Players may not move up to a higher division once the player has been rostered on a team. Great efforts are made to balance teams based on birthdate and known skill level. Leaving a team once the season has started, puts an unfair strain on the team the player leaves.

-Players may compete in multiple grade level divisions only if they pay registration fees for both divisions.

-Players may not compete for multiple teams within their grade level division. An exception to this rule is if a team has less than 1 substitute player on their team and the intent is not to alter the outcome of the game.
